Als het om droge huid gaat, weet ik hoe je je voelt. Mijn huid was ooit zo droog dat aan het eind van de dag de binnenkant van mijn kleding bedekt was met dode huidcellen (schilfertjes). De huid van mijn gezicht voelde ook oncomfortabel en strak.
Deze creme zorgt ervoor dat je huid beter aanvoelt doordat de bio-actieve ingrediënten continue door de dag heen vocht binden in de huid.

Hyaluronic acid is called 'nature's moisturizer', because it is the most hydrophillic (water-loving) molecule in the world. Hyaluronic acid provides continuous moisture to the skin by binding up to 1000 (!) times its weight in water. By acting this way as a space filler, hyaluronic acid smooths out wrinkels.

And this is good news for everyone who has, for instance, dull, extremely dry, mature or sensitive skin! These skin conditions can be improved and healed, making your skin glow with health.

In our Jasmine cosmeceutical skin care range we have used my absolutely favorite bio-active ingredient in each and every single product: the beautiful mushroom Schizophyllan. Schizophyllan stimulates the growth of Langer Han cells. These are the cells that communicate with your immune system, telling it when it should produce more healthy, new skin cells. Stimulating the growth of these cells is important because most of the time due to pollution, stress and aging, there are not enough cells left to 'do the talking', leaving your immune system unaware.

When you use our cosmeceuticals with the highest doses of Schizophyllan possible, new, healthy skin cells will be born, pushing dead skincells to the surface. The dead skincells will appear as tiny small, greyish rolls on your skin in a few minutes after you use the creme. You can just wipe them off. No worries, later on, when your skin condition is improved you'll have less dead skin cells. You will also notice your skin feels extremely comfortable, soft and even pleasantly warm. About the Jasmine perfume in our cosmeceuticals

This time I developed an over the top and expensive perfume to scent our new face and body products. I just love, love, love jasmine. So in this formula I combined lots of honey-like jasmine sambac and the more greener jasmine grandiflorum with the extract of beautiful, rare pink lotus flowers surrounded by fresh notes of bergamot and sweet orange. This flowery cocktail is calmed with soft, creamy sandelwood notes and a sugar sweet vanilla base. This perfume will dance on your skin, and will let you experience all its tones in unexpected ways.

Dit keer heb ik een over de top en duur parfum ontwikkeld om de nieuwe gezichts- en bodyproducten mee te parfumeren. Ik ben helemaal gek op Jasmijn. Daarom heb ik in deze formule honingachtige Jasmijn Sambac met de groenere Jasmijn Gradiflorum gecombineerd met een extract van de prachtige, zeldame Roze Lotus bloemen omgeven door frisse noten van Bergamot en zoete Sinaasappels. Deze bloemige cocktail komt tot rust door zachte, romige Sandelhout tonen en een suikerzoete Vanille basis. Dit parfum danst op je huid, en toont al haar facetten op onverwachte wijze.

Lavender Orange, face creme normal/combinated skin

Lovely light creme one a base of concentrated Aloe Vera and pure Golden Jojoba oil.
For over 3.500 (!) years Aloe Vera has been famous for it's healing, moisturising and calming properties. No wonder it was one of Cleopatra's skin care and beauty secrets... In this creme we use a Aloe Vera powder (from the inner fillet of the leave) which is 200 times more concentrated than the pure Aloe Vera juice! Although Jojoba oil is categorized as an oil, it actually is a liquid wax, extracted from seed of the Jojoba tree.  It closely resembles the natural sebum in our own skin and therefore, in theory,  can trick your skin in believing it produces enough oil. A nicely balanced skin is the result!

Rich creme on a base of shea butter and olive oil.
Shea butter became one of my first favorite ingredients when I started to develope skin care. Shea butter comes from the nuts (centre of the fruits) of the African Shea tree, also know as 'the tree of life'.  This tree can live up to 200 years, producing it's fruits once a year. To make the oil, the nuts are crushed and boiled. African healers uses shea butter for thousands of years for it's healing and moisturising properties. Shea Butter contains Vitamins A, D, E, and K that have a recognized effect against skin aging.
Another ancient beauty secret used in this creme is Olive oil (boy we really do use a lot of 'old'skin care ingredients...). Olive oil is high in antioxidants, including vitamin E. Antioxidants are nutritional powerhouses that protect against age-accelerating free radicals. The indulging mix of Shea butter with Olive oil will heal your dry skin, making it soft and supple.

Luxurious creme on a base of Macadamia oil and Rosehip oil.
When I first felt pure Macadamia oil on my skin, I was amazed by it's softness. I have always loved to eat the Macadamia nuts, but wauw the effect as a skin care ingredient cannot be overseen! Macadamia oil has proven itself as one of the most skin regenerative oils in the world. The oil is easily absorbed by your skin and will help the cells to rejuvenate.
Rosehip is a fairly new ingredient in modern cosmetic skin care products, but has gained popularity fast, as it contains good amounts of vitamin C, which is not only healing but is also super anti-aging. Because of it's wrinkle reducing properties Roship oil is described as 'the oil of youth'. You'll love the effect of this nourishing creme!

De huid wordt zo, in theorie, in de maling genomen dat het al genoeg olie produceert! Een mooi gebalanceerde huid is het resultaat!

Een rijke crème met een basis van Shea butter en Olijf olie. Shea butter werd een van mijn eerste favoriete ingrediënten toen ik net begon met het ontwikkelen van huidverzorging. Shea butter komt van de noten van de Afrikaanse Sheaboom, die ook bekend staat als "de boom des levens". Deze boom leeft wel 200 jaar en produceert elk jaar vruchten.
Afrikaanse geneesheren gebruiken al duizenden jaren de Shea butter voor haar genezende en vochtinbrengende eigenschappen. Shea butter bevat Vitamine A, D, E en K. Deze vitamines staan erom bekend dat ze beschermen tegen huidveroudering.
Een andere schoonheidsgeheim dat in onze crèmes gebruikt wordt, is Olijf olie. Olijf olie is een antioxidant die ook Vitamine E bevat. Antioxidanten zijn voedzame stoffen die beschermen tegen vrije radicalen die huidveroudering veroorzaken. De verwen mix van Shea butter en Olijf olie zal je droge huid zacht en soepel maken.

Een luxueuze crème met als basis Macadamia olie en Rozenbottel olie.
Toen ik voor het eerst pure Macadamia olie op mijn huid voelde, was ik verbaasd over de zachtheid van de olie. Macadamia noten heb ik altijd erg lekker gevonden, maar het effect van de olie in verzorgingsproducten is onovertrefbaar! Macadamia olie is een van werelds meest huidregenererende oliën. De olie wordt makkelijk opgenomen door je huid en helpt de cellen in het verjongingsproces.
Rozenbottel is een tameljk nieuwe ingrediënt in moderne cosmetische huidverzorgingsproducten, maar wint snel aan populariteit. Dit komt doordat het een hoge dosis Vitamine C bevat, die niet alleen helpt bij het herstel van de cellen, maar ook zorgt tegen huidveroudering. Vanwege haar rimpelvervagende eigenschap, wordt de Rozenbottel ook wel " de olie van de jeugd" genoemd. Je zult het effect van deze verzorgende crème prachtig vinden!

If you use our Lavender Orange lotion (toner)after cleansing your face, your skin will look better than ever!
Why?

1. restoring pH balance
After you've cleansed your face your skins pH balance is a little distorted. Your skin will try to restore this balance in a proces that can take up to 8 hours! During this time your skin will be more  vulnerable to unhealthy bacteria. If you do use our lotion on the other hand the pH balance is restored instantly.

2. removal of cleansing residues and water
After you've cleansed your face traces of  tapwater (which is not clean at all!)  and the cleanser are left on it's surface. So your face isn't as clean as can be yet. As a matter of fact, using a moisurizer now, will seal all the residues in your skin! Iiiieuw! Our lotion removes all these traces of dirt, leaving it's calming and moisturizing actives (from for instance aloe vera). And I know you've rather have those actives sealed in your skin than the pile up of dirty residues!

3.optimizing  the effect of your moisutizer
When your skin is truly clean, your moisturizer is easily absorbed by the skin because no dirt stands in their way. The water component of the toner will help the the actives to slide into the epidermis with great ease.

For long I was too lazy to use a toner....but really my skin looks much more radiant now I do use one daily (and I don't say this because I want to promote our lotions!).


Als je onze Lavender Orange lotion (toner) gebruikt na het reiniging van je gezicht, zal je huid beter uitzien dan ooit! Wil je weten waarom?

1. herstel van de pH balans
Nadat je je gezicht hebt gereinigd, is je pH waarde een beetje uit balans. Je huid zal proberen de pH waarde weer op pijl te krijgen, en dit proces duurt wel 8 uurtjes! In de tussentijd is je huid meer vatbaar voor ongezonde bacteriën. Als je onze lotion/toner gebruikt, zal de pH balans direct worden hersteld.

2. verwijderen van resten van reinigingsmelk en water
Na het reinigen van je gezicht blijven er nog resten van tapwater en reinigingsmelk achter op de oppervlakte. Je gezicht is nog niet zó schoon zoals je zou willen. In feite, als je nu een verzorgingsproduct gebruikt, zal het al deze resten vastsluiten op je huid! Iiiieuw!
Onze lotion verwijdert alle vuilresten en laat de kalmerende en vochtinbrengende active stoffen achter op je huid, zoals de Aloë Vera. Ik weet wel zeker dat je liever de kalmerende stoffen op je huid wilt hebben, dan een hoopje vuilresten!

3. optimaliseren van het effect van je gezichtsverzorging
Als je huid werkelijk schoon is, zal je gezichtsverzorging makkelijker worden opgenomen door de huid, omdat er geen vuil meer in de weg zit. Het water component van de toner zorgt ervoor dat de actieve stoffen in de gezichtscrème gemakkelijk worden geleid naar de opperhuid.

Voor een lange tijd was ik te lui om een toner te gebruiken....maar mijn huid ziet er werkelijk stralender uit nu ik het dagelijks gebruik (en ik zeg dit niet omdat ik onze lotions wil promoten!).

Lavender Orange cleansing milk

Our Lavender Orange cleansing milk is a light, non oily cleanser to remove make-up and dirt from your skin. I also love the way you can just whipe of your mascara with it if you put a small amount on a piece of cotton cloth (you can also use our cleansing oil in this way). At the spa our beauticians apply the milk with a quick massage on your skin and than remove it with a warm, wet towel. You can also do this at home, if you got a little more time to spare. It can be a little messy with the mascara though...but maybe it's just me. Anyway, your skin will feel soft and smooth afterwards!

Onze Lavender Orange reinigingsmelk is een luchtige, niet-vette reiniging om vuil en make-up van je huid te verwijderen. Ik vind het ook heerlijk hoe je met dit product op een watje heel makkelijk je mascare verwijdert (op deze manier kun je trouwens ook onze cleansing oil gebruiken).
In onze spa's brengt de schoonheidsspecialist de reinigingsmelk aan op de huid d.m.v. een korte massage en verwijdert het dan met een warm compres. Dit kun je ook thuis doen, als je wat meer tijd hebt. Het kan dan wel een beetje kliederen met de mascara worden...maar dat kan ook aan mij liggen. Hoe dan ook, je huid voelt daarna heerlijk zacht aan!

If you want a refreshed, clean skin in just a second, you should definitely try our Lavender Orange face wash. The fresh gel will turn into a soft foam the minute you mix it with a few drops of water. To do this you can just put a small amount of the gel in the palm of your hands, add a little water and make a foam. Don't forget to enjoy how your bathroom is filled with a lovely fresh scent while you cleanse your face with the tiny bubbles! I love to use this cleanser under the shower, because for me it is more easy to rinse it off. I have to admit that I am clumsy as can be and hate leaning over the sink, while water drips from your arms into your sleeves...So for me it's the relaxing cleansing oil or milk by night and the face wash in the morning as a fresh pick me up.

Al je in slechts enkele seconden een schone, frisse huid wil, moet je echt eens onze Lavender Orange face wash gebruiken. De frisse gel verandert direct in een zacht schuim, zodra je het met een beetje water mengt. Je kunt dit doen door een beetje gel in de palm van je hand te doen en op t schuimen met wat water. Geniet van de heerlijke geur waarmee je badkamer gevuld wordt, terwijl ij je gezicht wast met piepkleine bubbeltjes! Ik vind het heerlijk om deze reiniging onder de douche te gebruiken omdat het dan makkelijk is om af te spoelen. Ik ben namelijk ontzettend onhandig en heb er een hekel aan om over de wasbak te hangen terwijl water langs mijn armen in mijn mouwen drupt...Daarom gebruik ik ontspannende cleansing oil voor het slapen gaan en de face wash 's ochtends in de douche om wakker te worden.

Feeling sad

I've had some really sad news Today. My friend Annelies, which developed Bibou's luxury balm and bath salts, died of cancer last Thursday. She never gave up fighting, but just couldn't win this unfair battle. She was of big importance to me and Bibou and I will never forget everything she has done for me.

Bath time rituals

Bathing in warm, scented water can be a total bliss. Warm water relax your muscles, pure aromas sooth your mind and active ingredients pamper your skin. So, why not have a weekly bath time ritual? Even if you think you don't have time, in most cases you have! Only 30 minutes can do wonders (and it won't kill you to go to bed 30 minutes later...), here's my bathing ritual:
1. I let the water running. Because it takes a while to fill the bath, I do some household tasks I hate, like doing the laundry (such a never ending story!) or making the beds (nothing better than to get into those soft, clean, fresh smelling sheets after a bath!). Time flies, even when you don't have fun and my bath will feel even more like a reward.
2. After about 20 minutes (which doesn't include the 30 minute in total), when my bath is almost ready, I put some lavender orange cleansing oil, Monoï de Tahiti, bath salt or baby bathmilk in the water. I than cleanse my face and jump into the shower for a quick rinse. It all just takes five minutes.
3. I lay in the bath for about 15 minutes, just long enough to really relax.
4. When I get out I use one of our Luxury Balms or Monoï de Tahiti from head to toe (or actually the other way around). I also use a five minutes face mask (like our lavender orange collagen face mask) which I wipe off with a warm, wet towel. That's it! I will sleep like a baby afterwards.

Lavender Orange cleansing oil

For everyone who has never used an oil to cleanse their face...our ultra soft Lavender Orange cleansing oil is wonderful! Really, it is. I know you must be thinking that cleansing with an oil will make your face as greasy as a bag of fish and chips, but it doesn't. In our cleansing oil formula we use cosmetic grade sunfloweroil which helps to form a seal that retains moisture but allows your skin to breath. The effect is a glowing, healthy looking skin, not shiny or oily at all. You can also use it to remove your mascara. I even use it as a bathoil in the tub to perfume my skin (and whole second floor!).

Voor iedereen die nog nooit zijn huid gereinigd heeft met een olie...onze super zachte Lavender Orange cleansing oil is zalig! Echt waar. Ik weet dat je denkt dat reinigen met een olie je huid zo vet maakt als een zak met fish and chips, maar dat doet het niet. In onze cleansing oil gebruiken we een cosmetisch zonnenbloemolie die helpt om vocht in de huid te sealen terwijl hij niet afsluit. Het effect is een stralende, gezonduitziende huid die helemaal niet glimmend of vettig is. Je kunt het ook gebruiken om mascara mee te verwijderen. Ik zelf gebruik het zelfs als een badolie om mijn huid mee te parfumeren (en de hele tweede verdieping!).

Clean

We all kind of know that cleansing your face is the first step to a healthy, glowing look. But honoustly do you performe this task each and every single day? And I don't mean a quick splash of water, I'm talking about the whole shebang.

Well, if I speak for myself...with running a business and three little kids learning to sleep in their own beds, I sometimes hardly have the energy to take my contacts out, leave alone to remove just my mascara!
And I'm not alone in this. In our spa's we speak to women daily about their cleansing ritual, or more, the lack of it. A lot of women still use water and soap and the ones who do use, for instance, a cleansing milk forget to use a toner afterwards.

But did you know that you can actually see the difference if someone takes a little more effort? Hmmm, writing a blog can be confronting! From now on I will not skip a day! Here are two other reasons why you can consider to start too:
1. cleansing your face at night with wonderful fragranced products will
definitely sooth your skin, but also your mind! It can be soo relaxing
to take a few minutes for yourself
2. the active ingredients of your facecreme can do a better job, because
they will penetrate your skin more easily

Schoon
We weten ergens allemaal wel dat je huid reinigen de eerste stap is naar een stralende, gezonde look. Maar wees nou eerlijk, doe jij dit echt elke dag? En ik bedoel niet met een snelle plons water, nee echt een reiniging met alles erop en eraan.

Nou, als ik voor mijzelf spreek...met het runnen van een bedrijf en drie kleine kinderen die momenteel allemaal in hun eigen bed leren te slapen, heb ik 's avonds soms amper de energie om mijn contactlenzen uit te doen, laat staan om mijn mascare te verwijderen! En ik ben niet de enige. In onze spa's komen spreken we dagelijks vrouwen over hun reinigingsrituelen, of het gebrek ervan. Veel vrouwen gebruiken nogsteeds water en zeep en degenen die, bijvoorbeeld een reinigingsmilk gebruiken, vergeten erna weer een lotion.

Maar wist je dat je echt het vershcil kunt zien als iemand een beetje meer de tijd neemt? Hmmm, een blog schrijven werkt confronterend! Vanaf nu sla ik geen dag meer over! Hier zijn nog twee reden waarom ook jij moet overwegen om met het reinigen van je huid te beginnen:

Luxury balm by Annelies Desmond

For our luxury balm, with simular use as the Monoi de Tahiti, my dear friend Annelies took an old formula by mistake to a whole other level. In her wonderful kitchen she cooked up a special balm out of pure coconut oil, vegetable oils and essential oils, listening to the beautiful voice of Eva Cassidy and acompanied by her dog Abby. She didn't liked the result at all. 'Bietje (that's what she calls me) I just can't get it right', she told me one day handing over a jar of a mousse-like balm. But I loved it instantly. So for years Annelies made many, many batches for Bibou in colors and fragrances of my choice ('fresh cut roses', 'ylang ylang', 'rosemary lemongrass'and 'white tea orange'). When she left Holland to live abroad she officially gave me her secret recipe after she trained me in making the balm, a day I will never forget. Untill this day our luxury balms is one of our best sold items.

Voor onze luxury balm, die je hetzelfde kunt gebruiken als onze Monoi de Tahiti, bracht mijn lieve vriendin Annelies, per ongeluk een oude formule tot een heel ander niveau. In haar geweldige keuken 'kookte' ze een speciale balm uit pure cocosolie, plantaardige olieen en essentiele olie terwijl ze samen met haar hond Abby luisterde naar de prachtige stem van Eva Cassidy. How to use Monoi

The thing I love about Monoï de Tahiti is that you can use it for so many things. So here's a little list with some beautysecrets...

Body balm
If you use it as a body balm you'll see how the product will melt on your skin after taking a bath or shower. You can use it on wet or dry skin instead of a bodymilk. It will make your skin soft, fragrant and glowing.

Leave-in hair conditioner
You can also use Monoï as a leave-in conditioner by massaging a small amount in wet hair after washing it. Your hair will be soft and shiny and in some cases even a bit wavy. A daily scal pmassage with Monoï will promote the growth of healthy hair.
As a hair mask, you put a larger amount of Monoï in your hair, than wrap a towel around the hair and let it penetrate for about 15 minutes. Make sure to give your hair a good rinse afterwards.

Face mask
I love to use Monoï as a face mask, before I go to bed. Massaging a small amount on clean skin, will allow the oil to reveal it's moisturising and anti-aging qualities. You will wake up with a relaxed, healthy look. And it's wonderful to fall asleep with such a nice fragrance surrounding you!
When your skin is very dry, you can also massage a little bit Monoï on your skin before using your day cream.

Massage oil
Monoï makes a great massage oil. With no coloring, artificial perfume or preservatives it's so mild you can even use it on babies.

Bath oil
For a lushious, heavenly fragrant bath you can put a table spoon in a bath filled with warm water and mix it in by hand. Just be careful for the bath can become a little slippery.

After sun
Use Monoï after a day at the beach to sooth your skin.

When it's over 20 degrees celcius, it's better to put our Monoï in the fridge to prevent it from melting.


Hoe je Monoi gebruikt
Wat ik zo geweldig vind aan Monoï de Tahiti is dat je het op zoveel manieren kan gebruiken. Hier komt een lijstje met een paar beauty-geheimpjes...

Bodybalm
Als je het gebruikt als een body balm, zal je zien hoe het product smelt op je huid na het baden of douchen. Je kan het in plaats van een bodymilk gebruiken op een natte of droge huid. Het maakt je huid zacht, glanzend en heerlijk geurend.

Leave-in haar conditioner
Je kan de Monoï ook gebruiken als een leave-in conditioner door een klein beetje in je natte haar te masseren na het wassen. Je haar zal zacht worden en glanzen. In sommige gevallen zal het zelfs een beetje laten golven. Een dagelijkse hoofdhuid massage met Monoï kan ook de groei van gezond haar bevorderen.
Als een haarmasker, kan je iets meer Monoï in je haar masseren en het haar wikkelen in een handdoek, en laten voor 15 minuten laten intrekken. Zorg er goed voor dat het haar daarna grondig gespoeld.

Gezichtsmasker
Ik vind het heerlijk om de Monoï te gebruiken als een gezichtsmasker, voordat ik naar bed ga. Masseer een klein beetje Monoï op een gereinigde huid en de olie zal haar vochtinbrengende en anti-verouderende eigenschappen onthullen.
Je zult opstaan met een ontspannen en gezonde huid. En het is sowieso heerlijk om in slaap te vallen met zo'n heerlijke geur!
Als je huid erg droog is, kan je ook een beetje Monoï insmeren voordat je je huidverzorging gebruikt.

Massage olie
Monoï is een heerlijke massage olie. Zonder kleurstoffen of kunstmatige parfum of conserveermiddelen. Het is zo mild, dat je het zelfs op baby's kunt gebruiken.

Bad olie
Voor een weelderige en hemels geurende bad kan je ook een eetlepel Monoï in je bad doen. Wees wel voorzichtig, omdat het bad een beetje glad kan worden.

Gebruik Monoï na een dagje op het strand om je huid te verzachten.

Als het boven 20 graden Celcius is, is het beter om onze Monoï in de koelkast te houden, zodat het niet smelt.

Monoi de Tahiti

When I first experienced real Monoi de Tahiti, I loved the fairytale like fragrance and soft feel on my skin soo much, I had to sell it in my shops.
Monoi de Tahiti means 'fragrant oil from Tahiti. Using an ancient, polynesian method, Monoi is made by macarating handpicked, unopened buds of Gardenia Tahitensis flowers, within 24 hours after their harvest, in fresh coconut oil for at least 15 days. This process of soaking the highly fragrant flowers in oil is also called enfleurage. During the enfleurage the flowers release their fragrance and nutrients. No artificial colors, perfumes or preservatives are used, it's just the tahitian coconut oil and gardenia flowers!
At Bibou's we use the oil during facial- and bodymassages. As a big fan, we even have a 'La vita e bella' Spa Package which consist of a hotstone bodymassage with Monoi de Tahtiti followed by a Monoi bodywrap and scalpmassage in infra red blanket. Toen ik voor het eerste de echte Monoï de Tahiti voelde, werd ik zo verliefd op de sprookjesachtige geur en het zijdezachte gevoel, dat ik de Monoï moèst verkopen in mijn winkels.
Monoï de Tahiti betekent 'geurige olie van Tahiti'. Gebruikmakend van een oud Polynesische methode, wordt de Monoï gemaakt van handgeplukte, ongeopende knopjes van Gardenia Tahitensis bloemen. Deze bloemenknopjes worden binnen 24 uur na hun oogst voor 15 dagen geweekt in kokosnoot olie. Dit weekproces van uiterst geurende bloemen heet enfleurage. Gedurende de enfleurage komen de geuren en voedingsstoffen vrij van de bloemen. Geen kunstmatige kleuren, parfums of conserveermiddelen worden er gebruikt; alleen de kokosnoot olie en de Gardenia Tahitensis bloemen!
In Bibou wordt de Monoï gebruikt tijdens de gezichts- en lichaamsmassages. We hebben als grote fans zelfs een 'La vita e bella' Spa Package die bestaat uit een hotstone lichaamsmassage met Monoï, gevolgd door een Monoï lichaamspakking in een infrarood deken en een hoofdhuidmassage. How Bibou began to grow

Realising that you should live every day as if it's your last, made us stronger. Slowly Bibou began to gain popularity. More and more, people came in just to tell they were enjoying the products soo much. In 2006 my husband joined Bibou after he got his masters in medicine. I have to admit that from that moment on Bibou began to grow fast. We opened more city spa's in The Hague, Rotterdam and Schiedam. And we set up our own cosmetic laboratory where we could develope, test, produce and bottle all bibou products with a team of specialists. To me our cosmetic laboratory still is like a candy store! I can spend hours there, dreaming up new products and perfumes. It must be in my blood, my dad is a chemist.

Rock hard times

With the start of our city spa, moving Bibou to a bigger location and me and my husband (after nine years of living together)getting maried, 2004 should have been an exciting year.

Unfortunately it became one of the darkest periods in my life. It began on new years day, when we got the message our friends'brother died in an accident. He was in his thirties, just finished his studies and about to marry. We couldn't imagine, by then, what it should be like to lose your brother at such a young age. A few month later we did. Exactly one week after our wedding, when we just set foot in our hotelroom to start the Honeymoon, we got horrible,horrible news. My brother in law, two of our nephews and one of their girlfriends died in a caraccident. They were all about 23 years of age. It was like someone wriped my heart out with his bare hands. We had to take the plane back home as soon as we could. When we arrived in Holland, it was heartwarming how all our friends and family were gathered. Everyone was in complete shock, but they were there. We just couldn't believe what had happened. To make it even more sad, on the day of the accident our other best friend had to hear his 13 year old brother had only a few months left to live. And indeed, he died 6 months later. It was like living in a bubble of sadness when arround us life went on. But we had to move on too. Two month after the funeral of our four dear familymembers, we had to open a new shop and city spa. That year, losing six young people, I learned an important lesson which was of huge influence on Bibou. You have to make every day count, being grateful that your strong, healthy and alive.

The first Bibou City Spa

Because I liked the idea of people trying out our products during relaxing treatments, I hired our first beautician. The Bibou city spa was born.And it was a succes. This was in 2004, when there were no city spa's in Holland, we were actually the first one. Today it seems that everyone with a little cash and no vision at all is opening city spa's, copy pasting ideas. Time for a change in name, concerning the word 'city spa'. To us it's so 2004. We keep you informed about the new name! Innovating gives so much energy!

Omdat ik het een leuk idee vond dat mensen onze producten konden ervaren tijdens ontspannende behandelingen, nam ik onze eerste schoonheidsspecialist in dienst. De Bibou city spa was geboren. En het was een succes. Dit was in 2004, toen er in Nederland nog geen city spa's bestonden, we waren zelfs de eersten. Tegenwoordig lijkt het wel alsof iedereen met wat geld en geen visie een city spa opent. Tijd om met een nieuwe naam te komen voor 'city spa'. Voor ons is dit zo 2004! We houden je op de hoogte! Innoveren geeft zoveel energie!

The simple but chic Bibou look

The first Bibou shop

With the help of friends and family I opened the first Bibou shop in 2003. I had no city spa back then, just a shop filled with Bibou products. Thanks to our friend and designer Ivo Wasser (from Wasser Ontwerpen) Bibou got it's own, simple but chic look. It was amasing what Ivo could do with my low budget, or better NO BUDGET. Our bad ceiling was covered with about 100 rice paper lamps (which costs almost nothing) and all the furniture was handmade out of beautiful pitch pine wood. We still do it this way. We love our shops to have this honoust, down to earth look.
I have to say that most people didn't get the idea of my natural skincare concept with raw aroma ingredients like pure jasmin, neroli, petites grains and rose! A lot of days absoloutely noone visited the shop. So I gave samples to everyone who did came in and slowly Bibou began to gain popularity in Leiden. First expats discovered our products, later on students followed. And people began to ask for treatments with our products. The idea of a small spa in the city was born, not because it was trendy. Just because we had a shop in the heart of a city.

De eerste Bibou winkel
Met de hulp van vrienden en familie opende ik in 2003 de eerste Bibou winkel. Ik had toendertijd nog geen city spa, alleen maar een winkeltje vol met Bibou producten. Dankzij onze vriend Ivo Wasser (van Wasser Ontwerpen), kreeg Bibou haar eigen sober chique 'look'. Het was wonderbaarlijk wat Ivo kon doen met mijn lage-, of beter 0-budget. Ons lelijke plafond werd bedekt met 100 rijstpaiere lampen (die vrijwel nietskostten) en al de meubels werden met de hand gemaakt uit prachtig pitch pine hout. We doen het nogsteeds op deze manier. We willen graag dat onze winkels deze 'down to earth' uitstraling behoudt.
I moet zeggen dat de meeste mensen niets begrepen van natuurlijke huidverzorgingsconcept met ruwe parfumingredienten zoals jasmijn, neroli, petites grains en roos! Veel dagen kwam er absoluut niemand in de winkel. Daarom gaf ik kleine samples aan iedereen die wel kwam en langzaam begon Bibou aan populariteit te winnen in Leiden. Eerst werden we ontdekt door expats, daarna volgden studenten. En mensen begonnen te vragen naar behandelingen met onze producten. Het idee van een kleine spa in de stad was geboren, niet omdat het een trend was. Maar gewoon omdat we een winkel hadden midden in de stad.

Following intuition

As I grew older, my passion for perfumes, natural skincare and psychology only grew bigger and bigger. I collected as many perfume ingredients and books as I could. But it was not untill my Psychology studies in Leiden when Bibou came alive. For nights I was writing down new recipies and formulas like a mad woman. It was like something took over me sometimes! (Now I know that this 'something' is called inspiration.)
And than it happened, I found a beautiful shop in the city centre of Leiden where I studied! I rented it on the spot, not knowing anything about doing business, not having any money...an adventure began. Needless to say, I freaked out my boyfriend (now husband), friends and family! They also all hated the name I picked for my company 'Bibou'(I got a tough crowd at home!). But for me, it just couldn't be something else. You could imagine my heart took a little jump, when months later a japanese custumor explained me that Bibou means 'beautifull face' in japanese! For me a small little detail that gave me the feeling I was on the right track by following my intuition.

Intuitie volgen
Toen ik ouder werd, groeide mijn passie voor parfums, natuurlijke huidverzorging en psychologie steeds sterker. Ik verzamelde zoveel mogelijk parfumingredienten en boeken als ik kon. Maar pas tijdens mijn studie Psychologie kwam Bibou echt tot leven. Nachtenlang schreef ik als een bezetene nieuwe recepten en formules op. Het leek soms wel alsof ik het niet eens zelf deed! (Nu begrijp ik dat dit vlagen van inspiratie waren). 
En toen gebeurde het, ik vond een prachtige winkel in hartje Leiden waar ik studeerde! Ik huurde het ter plekke, zonder ook maar iets af te weten van zaken doen, zonder een cent op zak...het avontuur was begonnen. Het zal je niet verbazen dat ik mijn vriend (nu mijn man), vrienden en familie de stuipen op het lijf joeg! Ze vonden ook allemaal de naam verschrikkelijk die ik voor mijn bedrijf had uitgekozen 'Bibou' (ik heb geen makkelijk publiek thuis!). Maar voor mij kon het gewoon niet anders gaan heten. Je begrijpt dat mijn hart een sprongetje maakte, toen een japanse klant maanden later aan me uitlegde dat Bibou 'mooi gezicht' betekent! Voor mij een piepklein detail dat ik op de goede weg was, gewoon door puur mijn intuitie te volgen.

How it all began

For as long as I can remember I am fascinated (or even a little obsessed) with the sense of smell, perfumes, perfume ingredients and aromacology. 
At the age of two my favorite smell was that of my moms skin. A soft, clean powdery smell. Later on I 'collected' more favorites in my mind, such as the smell of, and I know this sounds cliche, fresh cut grass, roses from the garden, a new season in the air (you can actually smell that winter is near!), my dads sigarbox, old wine cellars and so on. 
And when my parents took me with them on their visits to other countries, all the new fragrance experiences were almost overwelming in a positive way. The smell of Bali, egyptian perfumes, australian candy stores, ripe mango's from Suriname, I can go on and on. They are still present in my mind. I also love to combine these fragrances in my mind.

But anyway, as I grew older, aside from fragrance another passion grew, that of skincare. For days I could read the labels of and stories about face-and body creams, showergels and shampoos. I bought lots and lots of them, filling the bathroom with all kind of jars and bottles, driving my parents crazy.

There was also a  third passion. People. From an early age on  I was intriged by other peoples behaviour, thoughts and emotions. 
It was not more than normal to me that you could make people feel better with the help of beautiful smelling skincare and perfumes. And this is from where the concept of Bibou started to develope. As a child I had a very clear vision of what I wanted to do in life and where Bibou is today is just a very small part of this.






Hoe het allemaal begon
Voor zolang als ik me kan herinneren ben ik gefascineerd (of zelfs een beetje geobserdeerd) door het reukzintuig, parfums, parfumingredienten en aromacologie.
Toen ik twee jaar oud was, was mijn lievelingsgeur die van mijn moeders huid. Een zachte, schone, poederachtige geur. Later sloeg ik meer favorieten op in mijn geheugen, zoals, en ik weet dat dit cliche klinkt, de geur van vers gemaaid gras, rozen uit de tuin, een nieuw seizoen in de lucht (je kan gewoon ruiken dat de winter in aantocht is!), mijn vader's sigarenkistje en zo voort.
En toen mijn ouders mij meenamen naar het buitenland, waren al de nieuwe geurindrukken overweldigend op een positieve manier.De geur van Bali, egyptische parfums, australische snoepwinkels, rijpe mango's in Suriname, zo kan ik nog wel even doorgaan. Ze zijn allemaal nog heel levendig in mijn geheugen. Ik vind fantastisch om deze geuren in mijn hoofd te combineren.


Maar goed, toen ik ouder werd, groeide er naast mijn geurenpassie een passie voor huidverzorging. Dagenlang kon ik de labels van en verhalen over gezichts- en bodycremes, douchegels en shampoos lezen. Ik kocht heel veel van deze producten en vulde de badkamer met verschillende potten en flessen. Mijn ouders werden er gek van...


En er was een derde passie. Mensen. Van jongs af aan was ik gefasci
neerd door andermans gedrag, gedachten en emoties.
Voor mij was het niet meer dan logisch dat je mensen zich beter kon laten voelen met behulp van heerlijk geurende huidverzorging en parfums. En zo begon het concept van Bibou langzaam maar zeker te groeien. Als kind had ik een duidelijk beeld van wat ik tijdens mijn leven wilde doen. De Bibou van vandaag is slechts een klein begin van wat ik in mijn hoofd heb.

Today I start

Today I just had to do it, start a blog about Bibou! As the founder and owner of Bibou I would love love love (!) to share anything concerning Bibou. That is background information about the natural ingredients we use in our skin care and perfumes, treatments you can book in our spa's, new products that I develope, people I encounter and things that inspirer me.

Have to say, it feels like such a relief to 'empty my head' by writing stuff down. There is so much I want to share that it alsmost drives me crazy! As you'll soon find out (or already did) my native language is not english, but dutch...so I appologize for my recent and future grammer and other language related mistakes. Along the way I'll pimp my blog with pictures and probably a different layout. Still finding out how this all works...Catch up with you soon!




Vandaag begin ik
Vandaag moest ik er gewoon aan beginnen, een Blog over Bibou. Als eigenaar en oprichter van Bibou wil ik heel, heel, heel (!) graag alles wat Bibou aangaat met jullie delen. Hier bedoel ik mee, achtergrond informatie over natuurlijke ingredienten die we in onze huidverzorging en parfums gebruiken, behandelingen die je in onze spa kan ondergaan, nieuwe producten die ik aan het ontwikkelen ben, mensen die ik tegenkom en zaken die me inspireren.


Ik moet zeggen, dat het echt een opluchting is om 'mijn hoofd te legen' door dingen op te schrijven. Gaandeweg zal ik mijn Blog mooier gaan maken met foto's en waarschijnlijk een andere layout. Ben nog aan het uitvinden hoe alles werkt...tot snel!
